One bitterly cold night in Canada, a bunch of metalheads descended on a park in Kitchener, Ontario because in this park was a little venue called The Boathouse. Now tonight, hometown metal heroes Aepoch were headlining a night of Metal with the help of local bands Dioxide Angel and Cynaptic as well as Quebec Death Metallers Bookakee.
Formerly under the name Dreams of Prophecy, the boys in Cynaptic kick off their first show with a new name and kick it off right. The sound was destructive without taking away from each other and the real surprise was that a local band with no releases played no covers. All the songs were down pat and Cynaptic showed that they had what it takes to stay around.
After a brief change over the odd band out, Dioxide Angel, took the stage bringing a full of Death Metal mixed with Dance Party show. I'll be honest, I don't get it, it's not my kind of music, but with a few drink down I can party to it. It's almost like Pop Metal, you don't like it but it's the kind of stuff you can dance to. Regardless, Dioxide Angel got the crowd moving and it looked like a lot of people were having a good time which is the important thing. Closing out with a cover of Blue (Da Ba Dee) was a little surprising and a lot of fun.
Next up was Bookakee, who I missed a chunk of since I got to be part of their show but what I did see consisted of a lot of headbanging metalheads, a pregnant woman being cut open (calm down it's part of their show) and Donkey Kong being chainsawed with blood spurting everywhere. I think at this point everyone was rocking, if this was The end of the night no one would have complained, they got their money's worth, but there is still another band to go on.
Closing out the night is Aepoch the local Metal heroes. Now this is a band I've seen 7 times now over the past year and outside of a few technical difficulties, this was probably the strongest set they had put on. For any locals who follows this band, they would have gotten everything they wanted in this set whether it be the Black Metal inspired "Burn Them At the Stake" or the songs from the bands original demo. Maybe it's the two parter, concept piece "Aepochalypse" from the bands EP of the same name. For the audience members who might not have known Aepoch then they got to enjoy "Creeping Death" a killer cover of Metallica's masterpiece, with members of the audience doing vocals.
Technical difficulties and personal preferences aside, this night was a lot of fun and everyone in the audience seemed to think so as well. Didn't hear a single complaint from anyone in the audience, so that's always a good sign. If and of these bands end up playing near you, check em out.
