Interview with Joey Z. of Life of Agony
“A Place Where There’s No More Pain” is on the brink of release, must be an exciting time for you!
The band has worked very hard with crafting this record exactly the way we wanted it. We're more than excited for the world to hear it and embrace it.
I suppose welcome backs are in order as well, this marks the first Life of Agony studio album in 12 years!
Yeah, we had a long stretch there didn't we... That's just how it goes. We are very spontaneous and things happen with LOA when they're supposed to, even with going away for a while.
It was just very important to us to put out a great piece of work that we could stand behind and be proud of. We accomplished that.
One surprising thing is that the lineup to Life of Agony has barely shifted in the past 25 years, how have you guys not gotten sick of each other?
This band is like any other family. There are times when things are great, and there are times when we need some space. Right now, things are working and we're having a good time.
There is a maturity within the band on every front that's helping with that. We all have more responsibilities outside of the band, families, children, and I think that helps. When we were younger EVERYTHING was about the band. Now there are important things going on outside the band which puts less stress on everything within the band. We are a lot more care free now and it's been working. To much pressure can be a very bad thing.
Tell us a little bit about “A Place Where There’s No More Pain”, as a band that focuses on agony, what are the lyrics like for this release?
Our lyrics from day one were always intended to bear the truth, which in the end helps people. They can hear there own situations within the lyrics and relate on a deeper level. This is the sole reason our band has stood the test of time, and I credit Alan and Mina for this. A Place Where There's No More Pain is no different than the other messages we have put out there. It's just another way of reaching out to our audience and letting them know we understand their struggles. We're creating "a place" for them to heal and get stronger.
Was recording much different for this album? It’s been a while since you all went into the studio together after all.
The approach this time was completely different from the past. We weren't all in the room, all the time. As a matter in fact, we deliberately worked one on one with our co-producer Matt Brown to get the performances. We were able to dive deeper within our selves to hit another level of focus. Speaking for myself, I was transcending daily while recording the guitar tracks with Matt. It was so important to the both of us to pull the best out of me, and that we did.
Some fans think Life of Agony has gotten soft over the years, what are your thoughts on that?
Haha, listen to the new record and then try to ask that question again. We've been on a musical journey for almost 30 years with this band. Influences are constantly changing, our lives are constantly changing. Variety and exploration has only expanded the band and it's creativity. We don't see anything wrong with that. This new release will definitely silenced the ones that may have questioned our "heaviness".
What’s next for Life of Agony? Is it time to tour or what’s the plan?
Tour, tour, tour, that's the plan for now.
Last but not least do you have any messages you’d like to share with your long term fans?
Well, It's pretty simple.... We would have NO career without them. It is truly a partnership. Thank all of you out there that have ever supported us and still do.
Thank you!
JZ
