Beware The Light's "The Light, The Hope, The Very End" EP Review

     5 Piece German Melodic Death Metal/Deathcore band Beware the Light have released their new EP "The Light, The Hope, The Very End" through Bandcamp on April 21st, 2014. The EP consists of 5 incredibly writen songs (4 new and one remastered) that keep you glued to the music from front to back. With different sounds from different bands all the way through the album like The Black Dahlia Murder, Job For A Cowboy and Cannibal Corpse it is near impossible for any Death Metal fan not to enjoy at least part of this album!

     "The Reaping" kicks off the album with a very "out at sea" sounding intro (seriously listen to the song to understand what the hell im talking about). Not to mention the incredible bas during the intro. As soon as the vocals and instrumentals begin you cant help but headbang after a perfectly timed "LET THE REAPING BEGIN." After vocal changes from low to high growls almost as often as Trevor from The Black Dahlia Muder, the band goes into an incredibly heavy "breakdown" part (I know what people thing of breakdowns but trust me, this is some Sepultura shit right here). After some incredibly heavy instrumentals and a bit of vocals the song finishs, fastest 3:30 minutes you'll sit through. Not a whole lot to say about this besides the fact that it's perfect for fronting this album.

     "Psychosis" jumps right into it, with blistering dual guitars that gradually get slower and heavier as the vocals kick in, just to jump back into the blistering part they started with. after about 40 seconds of the song the guitars jump into a sweet guitar part not many bands use, just to be followed by a soft melodic section with more cool bass (props for giving the bass attention). The bridge comes just soon enough for you to not get bored with the slow part followed by a "uhhaa" that many death metal bands use. The vocals go to a higher deathcore vocal style and drop back into a low growl, very Job For A Cowboy-ish. The song outs with a 5 second "breakdown" section that lead to a squeeling guitar and jump right into the next song.

     "Misanthropic Traits" prepare, Dying Fetus have entered the building with this awesome heavy squeely into, that surprisingly ends with a sweet 2 second bass solo before jumping back into the chaos. With incredible (incredible to someone who likes death metal) vocals over blistering guitar parts leading to a slower galopping part with more killer vocals then blends in one of the guitars doing alternatting high notes that are audioble but not the centre of attention really helps keep you glued to this song. The song leads to an insanely heavy breakdown section, but not before to long before jumping in and out from breakdown to their main riff of the song and back into breakdown thats just gonna make you wanna punch shit its so heavy! and with this the song closes out. I must add I love the title of the song.

     "Regret Nothing" is the remastered song of the album that was released originally back in July of 2013 through Bandcamp. the intro vocals show a very deathcore side to the vocalist while the instrumentals sound like their own version of Cannibal Corpse's "Evisceration Plague." This section slows down for the majority of the song but makes the riff itself feel so much heavier. At about 1:30 the band guitars go into a tapping "Death In Fire" riff before going into a small clean vocal section and jumping back into the earsplitting death metal vocals. With the vocals clear intention that you SHOULD BE MOSHING NOW by yelling "GO!" and some incredibly killer instrumentals that make you want to mosh anyways before jumping back into the tapping riff this song is clear it would be a killer song to be in the pit for! After some more clean vocals there is a "this is how we do.." and queue the Chris Barnes style pig squeel "...IIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!" to close out the song.

     "The Light, The Hope, The Very End" the title track is set to close out the album and with another slow introduction you start to question whats coming. With a clean tapping riff over a distorted rythem section the song gradually gets more and more heavy before the vocals kick in and both guitars end up being distorded again. If the album has held your attention this far you're gonna be here until the end because this song jumps around enough to keep you guessing but not so much that it gets annoying like some bands tend to do. Being a deathcore band this track clearly will have breakdowns still but they are so short that by the time they bug you (if you don't like them that is) they're over. jumping back into a standerd riff for a few bars prepare yourself for the killer drumming you may have been waiting for with vocals over top, followed by the vocalist growling "REPENT!" that drops into a section that i have no idea what to classify it as, is it a breakdown? Or is it just a normal section? I have no idea but it closes out the album pretty damn well nonetheless!

     overall 20 minues of pure death metal/deathcore ecstasy any true melo death or deathcore fan can benefit from listening to this. Absolutely killer overall 9/10 and i cant wait to see what else comes from this band!

Secret Broadcast "Filthy Souls" Review

Canadian Rock trio Secret Broadcast are releasing their Debut album "Filthy Souls" through eOne Canada and I was lucky enough to score an early copy of the album being released April 8th (purchase on iTunes HERE) plus as an added bonus, their cover track of "Breed" in honour of Kurt Cobain may be downloaded for free on April 5th, 2014 HERE

The album consists of 13 songs (plus i will add my own input on the "Breed" cover at the end) with a strong diversity in sound from indie, grunge and rock all being strong in their own points.

 

"Mad As A Hatter" is the absolute perfect track to open this album, with a great sense of it'll pull you in and make you realize what is in store for you through the rest of the album. With a very catchy melody with the added memorable lyrics this song is an instant radio hit, now wait i know what your thinking "oh its just a sell out song" or something of that sort but no its far from that. it is a great song that will engulf you in the album and make you listen to the entire album because your instantly hooked by the catchy melody and you'll be singing along to the lyrics plus you'll realize "every body's crazy."

 

"Killing Time" kills no time to jump right into it being hit by the indie/grunge sound that I love about this band. Plus the meaning is so simple, imagine being in high school and being alone with a "female friend" or a "male friend" parents go out for the night and you want to kill time. Anyone who went through high school knows the meaning behind this song all Secret Broadcast are doing are putting all the thoughts running through your mind into a song. Add some great instrumentals and here you are with an incredible song!

 

"More Than Friends" what doesn't the title tell you about this song? You're in school there's this girl you're friends with and you wanna be more then that how did you tell them back then? "I gotta tell ya, i really like ya, i gotta tell ya i like you more than friends" come on tell me I'm wrong that's just how school went. There's just nothing bad about this song, the instruments are well done as are the vocals and the fact that the bass is so in your face in this song is just something i love that not enough bands seem to do.

 

"Stardust" the first of a few slow songs on the album is very much a love song theres really nothing else to say about it. Slow acoustic guitar, loving lyrics about laying next to that special someone and just talking. If you like indie love songs you'll enjoy this song if you don't like em, i suggest you give it a chance and decide for yourself if you skip it next time it comes on or not.

 

"One Born Every Minute" really gives you the sense that wow one day im gonna die.. and what am i leaving behind? who will remember me? besides that note, the song is a sort of slow song with very well done instrumentals that just fit the lyrics and the vocals ever so perfectly. As well as the fact that its another song with a very in your face bass riff throughout the entire song. the song spans across your entire lifetime from birth to staring into your "special someones" eyes and inevitibly death. Is it sad? not if you've accepted that one day you'll die.

 

"Knockin' On My Door" a very traditional pop rock song in terms of sound. this song doesnt break any new ground but if you like the traditional pop rock then there is no reason you wouldn't like this song.

 

"Youth" a very nice pickup after the last track, simply put about being young and wanting to have fun while youre young. Very strong rock song that really adds some new ground in what to expect from Secret Broadcast. Plus giving credit where its due, there is a great guitar solo in this song so that should be a good enough reason to take my word for this song right?

 

"Rest Of My Life" the new age "Stairway To Heaven" if you were to go to a school dance and expect any song to see all the couples dancing together this is it. A very lovely slow song with a ton of emotion put into the lyrics to put it simply its all about looking into that special persons eyes and telling them honestly "i wanna be with you the rest of my life."

 

"Another Like You" you want to talk weird change in an album this is it. Go from I never want to lose you, to well im not with you anymore so lets try to get with other chicks. Of course the chorus talks about how "there will never be another like you" which is very typical highschool boy talk but its still a strange and pretty funny change.

 

"This Is Not Here" a groozy slow song about the thoughts a guy thinks when he sees all these girls that half dressed, maybe im taking the wrong message from it but "cover your skin" sorta gives me that message. at night the wolves come out, as we howl at the moon to these girls showing skin. Take a listen when you get the chance who knows maybe you'll hear the same thing.

 

"No One Left Here" if you're looking for the best song to judge drumming abilities on this album this is it. a very drum heavy song about realizing you have to start taking the blame for your actions, you have to stop blaming people for your mistake so stop screwing with people's lives. when there is "no one left here to justify my actions, i guess it'll finally take the blame."

 

"We Are Electric" if you're looking to move your body this is the song to do it too, fast riffs, lyrics about being with someone and wanting to move being electric together. This song closes off the album perfectly really making it obvious if you wanna be with this girl, you'll feel it. you'll be electic together.

 

"Breed" the bands cover of Nirvana is a great new take on the song. getting away from the grunge sound that Nirvana are known for really shows this band can make this there own and not kill the song like a lot of bands do, but if you don't trust me, judge for yourself on April 5th when this song is free for download.

 

Overall this album is great and honestly may as well be a concept album with the subtitle "Life As A School Kid" it does such a great job portraying the mind of a male kid in middle and highschool. If you enjoy the indie/modern rock scene i'd suggest you pick up this album and really give it a chance. all together 8.5/10
